There is something hidden underneath that stone of yours. I think I've seen a glimpse. Show me more.

"Misery is almost always the result of thinking. " - French writer Joseph Joubert

"Doing as others told me, I was blind.
Coming when others called me, I was lost.
Then I left everyone, including myself.
Then I found everyone, including myself. " Rumi

This too, shall pass...

A student went to his meditation teacher and said, "My meditation is horrible! I feel so distracted, or my legs ache, or I'm constantly falling asleep. It's just horrible!"

"It will pass," the teacher said matter-of-factly.

A week later, the student came back to his teacher. "My meditation is wonderful! I feel so aware, so peaceful, so alive! It's just wonderful!"

"It will pass," the teacher replied matter-of-factly.

Yogi tea and Albert Einstein

"So lange du zweifelst, kannst du den Weg nicht finden. " - Yogi Tea
(As long as you doubt, you can not find the way.)

And here's a good one from a few days back from my handy, re-usable German calender:

"Man muss diese Welt nicht verstehen.  Man muss sich nur darin zurechtfinden. " - Albert Einstein

(One must not understand the world. One must only deal with it. )

Absolutely brilliant. And the cool thing is that Einstein was German, so this quote was most likely written auf Deutsch first...

Protect yourself...

..from your own thoughts. - Rumi

How, how, how? (With yoga and meditation natuerlich, see class schedule). And from which ones do I need protection? Only the destructive ones? I like those crazy, dreamy ones...

TRUTH...again? Ja wohl.

" All truth passes through 3 stages: First it is ridiculed; then it is violently opposed; Finally, it is accepted as self-evident. " - Arthur Schopenhouer (1788-1860) German philosopher

More on TRUTH...a reoccurring theme that never tires...

"Ugly truth heals better than 'soothing' denial. " -Excerpt from the book,  "The Angry Heart"

- I like that. A lot. Glad someone feels strongly enough about that statement to write it in their book.

Rotten fruit can be salvaged...and made into wine.

"Your life is the fruit of your own doing.  You have no one to blame but yourself." J. Campbell

"It is by going down into the abyss that we recover the treasures of life. Where you stumble, there lies your treasure." J. Campbell

"Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors where there were only walls. " Joseph Campbell

Afterthought: One has to find their bliss before they can follow it. How does one find their bliss? For me it's in those "A-ha/Ach-so" moments, those moments that feel right and exciting, when something is right-on-the-money...and feels terrifically comfy. If we pay attention and recognize those moments, and go back to the environments that trigger those moments, again and again...we'll eventually find our bliss, or at least the next step in the path leading that way.  (So I think this to be true today.)

But how does one find their bliss when they can barely breathe? Those are times when "follow your bliss" seems ridiculous, and so out of reach.  Maybe then it is simply a time to learn how to breathe... differently, that is; learn how to focus on the one thing that we can do automatically without focus (tricky), breathing. The power in the breath; changing the breath patterns, increasing or decreasing the length of each breath, controlling or simply observing the breath, and even holding the breath, is just that, powerful. Changes in the breath can have negative and positive results on the functioning of every cell in our body. So what to do? To retain or not to? We're told growing up that holding the breath is not a good thing to do, that it causes more stress, tightness and tension to the body etc. And then in advanced yoga trainings, we are taught practices where you hold the breath, after both inhaling and exhaling. Why? How is it now good for the body and mind?  When can this benefit and when can it harm? I've been wondering this for years. I still don't know; I'm not a doctor, physiologist or whatever it might take to fully understand. (If any knowledgable sources out there read this, I would appreciate your input or links to good reading material on this. )

So, starting with the basics, here is a safe and simple exercise to try during those times of "barely breathing" or anytime at all, like right now. Now. Time yourself for a minute and count how many breaths you naturally take (11-15ish?).  Then try to decrease that number in the next minute as you deepen every inhale and exhale, drawing in the abdomen at the end of each exhale, forcing out even more stale air (down to 4-6 breaths?).  Try 2 minutes of this, and see how you feel after a brief period of focused, deeper breathing. More stressed than before, or more energized yet calmer, with less "stuff" on the mind? Hopefully the latter or don't try this again at home :-).

Happy Breathing (corny but sincere).  - Linda Lu

YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH

" Men stumble over the truth from time to time, but most pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing happened. "  Winston Churchill

" The truth will set you free, but first it will make you miserable. "  Jim Davis

" In this world, those who seek the truth will also find trouble. "  Gary Amirault

" It's not a matter of what is true that counts but a matter of what is perceived to be true. " Henry Kissinger

" There are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isn't so; the other is to refuse to believe what is so. "  Soren Kierkegaard

" Truth is like the sun. You can shut it out for a time, but it ain't goin' away. " Elvis Presley

And lastly...

" The opposite of a correct statement is a false statement.  But the opposite of a profound truth may well be another profound truth. "  Niels Bohr
